Description: O.S. Hitchner Controversy File includes correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings and editorials relating to allegations of fiscal impropriety waged against the university by O.S. Hitchner and Claude O. Ellis. Claude O. Ellis, a resident of Grayville Illinois, and O.S Hitchner, a resident of Freeport, Illinois and president of Midland Lumber Company, levied extensive criticism towards what they believed to be fiscal waste in the university. The files include clippings of the critical articles from state and local newspapers, as well as the public responses of the President's office to the charges. Most files date from the Chase administration (1930-1933), but some continue into the Daniels administration (1933-1934) and Willard Administration (1934-1946).
