Prizes and awards, recognitions, including 1886 - New Orleans, North, Central, and South American Exposition - award for meritorious display of student work; 1889 - Paris - Exposition Universelle de Paris - for exhibition of documents; 1899 - Chicago - Lafayette Memorial Commission - recognition of contribution; 1899 - Chicago - laying of cornerstone of U.S. Government Building; 1901 - Buffalo, New York, Pan American Exposition, recognition of display of student work; 1904 - St. Louis Universal Exposition commemorating the Louisiana Purchase - grand prize for general exhibit illustrating courses of instruction and methods and results of university work; and 1915 - San Francisco Panama - Pacific International Exposition - silver medal to the State of Illinois for a collective exhibit of the state's mineral resources and products.

The series includes certificates for the 1876 - Philadelphia - United States Centennial International Exhibition; 1946 - United States Navy and War Department Recognitions and certifications of the 1933 - Chicago Century of Progress International Exposition.

Biographical Note for University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Office of the University President :

The President is the principal administrative officer of the University and a member of the faculty of each college, school, institute and division.1 The original charter designated the chief executive officer of the university as regent but this title was changed to President in 1894.2 The President is elected by the Board of Trustees and is responsible to them for the operation of the university.3 The President prepares budgets for presentation to the board, recommends persons to the Board for appointment to University positions, and is responsible for the enforcement of the rules and regulations of the University.4 On recommendation of the appropriate Senate and by authority of the Trustees, the President issues diplomas conferring degrees.5
