Alfred O. Gross was a well-known ornithologist who was born in Atwood, IL in 1883. He graduate of University of Illinois Academy in 1903 and received his B.A. Degree from University of Illinois in 1908. He then went on to receive his Ph.D. from Harvard and was instructor (1912-1913) and professor of biology (1913-1953) at Bowdoin College in Maine.
