Brief Description: Historical Materials contain correspondence, minutes, financial reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, and publications relating to the Speech and Theatre Departments, University Theatre, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and concerning faculty, personnel, scripts and production notes for University Theatre plays (1951, 1960-63, 1979), photographs of department staff, students, and alumni, minutes of the Illini Theatre Guild (1928-33), Mask and Bauble ritual and membership lists (1954-57), National Collegiate Players ritual and bylaws, Pierrots pledge book, finances, and music and lyrics for Pierrots' production of Nada (1928), and biographical information on Clara Behringer, Harold Hillebrand, Joseph Scott, Webster Smalley, and Wesley Swanson, lists of University Theatre productions (1950-71) and financial reports (1962-64, 1972), and resource materials on early modern European and English drama and theatres.

The Theatre Department was created on April 19, 1967, when those aspects of the Department of Speech and Theater oriented to performance were transferred from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to the College of Fine and Applied Arts.1 The Board of Trustees authorized the establishment of a curriculum leading to a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater, with areas of specialization in Acting, Directing and Playwrighting, and Technology and Design.2 In 1969 the Department began offering a program leading to a Master of Arts degree.3
