Scope and Contents of the Materials

Frank Hall Armstrong (1877-1955) (B.Eng. 1899) Papers (ca. 1877-1972) include a memoir (ca. 1960, published 2011) written by Charlotte Armstrong that contains the family history of Armstrong and genealogical charts for the Pascoe Family (prepared by Susan Elizabeth Pascoe Cain Armstrong, 1972), and photographs of family members, Michigan scenes, University of Illinois student rooms, trumpet playing, and family reunions. The Memoir, "I Knew a Fellow Who Was Six Feet High," includes background on Armstrong's parents, children, and grandchildren, his work for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company, Penn Iron Mining (Vulcan, Michigan) and his work designing a hydraulic shovel for iron ore mining and the Armstrong pneumatic shovel for mining, and life in Michigan's Upper Pennisula. The papers also include a photocopy of "Grandmother's Rhymes's (1832) by Elsie Strawn Armstrong, photographs of the the Hall and Armstrong families (ca. 1877-1920s), and a plaque from the Armstrong Coalbreak Company.
